Aldi's wine range continues to impress on many levels: value for money, quality, consistency, relevance, interest and choice. The German retailer has never shied away from being über-competitive in an increasingly crowded and cut-throat marketplace. The latest selection comes a year after we started to become used to drinking at home instead of going out. There's a diverse range of styles here with a few surprises and a focus, across their whole drinks portfolio, on the latest trends, as life begins to head towards some form of normality.
During lockdown, wine, beer and spirits lovers showed a willingness to experiment with their choice of drinks. This trend is set to grow further, particularly among the Gen Zedders (18-24 year-olds) and includes 'low and no' alcohol and ready-to-drink (RTD) products. Aldi had already increased its offerings in these key areas last year and, in 2021, shows no sign of slowing down.
The RTD alcohol category comprises hard seltzers, flavoured alcohol beverages and pre-mixed cocktails. The single-serve nature of RTDs, their portability and ease of storage, have been key growth factors, especially during Covid-19. In fact, in 2020, Aldi saw sales of canned alcoholic drinks grow by over 50%. So, with outdoor gatherings back on the agenda and temperatures starting to creep up, Aldi's latest RTDs are the ideal addition to a park picnic, BBQ or spring walk! They're sessionable, fun and hit that lower ABV spot as well. 😊
Wine has been muscling into this sector over the last few years too and Aldi recently launched its biggest ever range of wine and cocktails in cans. Andy Maxwell, Aldi UK Sparkling, Fortified Wine and Spirits Wine Buyer, says: "We're launching a new range of sparkling wine cans to cater for the growing number of shoppers looking for great quality canned drinks to enjoy outside in the sun."
Pinot Grigio Fizz Can (£1.49, 20cl, 11.5% ABV) and Rosé Fizz Can (£1.49, 20cl, 10% ABV) are the newest wine-based arrivals, coming at a time when UK sales of canned wine are rising. The Pinot Grigio Fizz Can is a soft, fruity, refreshing, light sparkling wine that's easy to drink on any spring or summer day. The Rosé Fizz Can is similarly uncomplicated, fresh and fruity picnic fun, designed to put a smile on your face 😎.
These two sparkling wines are joined on shelf by Aldi's biggest ever range of canned cocktails 🍸. Eleven different varieties have now joined Aldi's already popular Greyson's G&T cans, meaning there's something for all tastebuds. These include Aperini Spritz (250ml) and Austin's Summer Punch (250ml) - Aldi's answer to Pimms & Lemonade - both costing just 85p!
Aldi's latest portfolio of wines is full of top value global treats. From Europe come Austrian Chardonnay, English Bacchus, Italian Aglianico 🍷, Jurançon Sec, Portuguese Loureiro and many others. From further afield, there's Australian Durif, South African Semillon, sparkling Malbec 🍾 from Argentina, Uruguayan Tannat and two delicious Rieslings from opposite parts of the world - Canada and New Zealand.
Josh Heley comments further: "Our Specially Selected branding, which superseded the Exquisite Collection last year, has been a roaring success. We have a big focus on this within the Spring Summer collection. Another resounding success last year was our updated Classic Icons collection. I've had great enjoyment curating this range. Having such a strong selection of online-only wines has also allowed us now to really push the boundaries when it comes to our new range. Our ambition for this year is to maintain our status as consistently one of the fastest growing and best performing wine retailers. If we pick up any more industry accolades to go alongside it, well, I'll raise a glass to that! Much time has been spent ensuring we have stunning new bottle designs to reflect the absolute top-quality liquids we have on sale at extraordinary price points."
