The Mendoza wine area dates back to the late 16th century and today is the largest wine producing region in South America. Divided into five large sub-regions in the west of Argentina, it has the largest number of wineries and 75% of the total vineyards in the country, lying at altitudes of between 1,000 and 5,000 feet.
Mendoza is particularly known for its Malbec, with 20% of the total area of Malbec planted in the country, according to Wines of Argentina. Other grapes include Bonarda, Cabernet Sauvignon, Syrah, Tempranillo and Chardonnay, for example.
Founded in 1902, Argentina's Catena Zapata is renowned across the world. The winery is credited for Malbec's revival and also for discovering extreme high altitude sites in the foothills of the Andes mountains in Mendoza, suitable for growing vines.
Tesco Finest 'The Trilogy' Malbec 2017 is made by the Catena family from grapes grown in three different high altitude vineyards in Mendoza. The wine is aged in a mixture of French and American oak barrels of first, second and third use.
