Supernatural Wine Company Spook Light Skin-Fermented Pinot Gris 2016
Supernatural Wine Co. from Hawkes' Bay, New Zealand is a producer of certified organic, white and unfiltered, skin-fermented white wines from grapes grown on lime-rich, clay soils enriched with volcanic materials. With a focus on natural winemaking, they use indigenous yeast from their steep, sunny, north-facing hillside vineyard and in 2015, began using biodynamic farming practices. Minimal intervention is an integral part of the company's philosophy of producing true terroir-driven wines that allow the natural aromatics and flavours of the grapes to shine and only a little sulphur is added before bottling.
Spook Light is made from 100% Pinot Gris fermented on skins for 2-3 weeks and left unfined and unfiltered. Deep orangey gold in colour, the nose is floral and fruity with notes of wild strawberries, cherries, stone fruit and herbal hints, while the layered palate offers a good depth of flavour with strawberries, peaches, touches of herbs and spice plus a slightly creamy mouth feel too. This is a riper, fuller, textured style of Pinot Gris with good length, while the tannins are well-balanced and not aggressive. This wine would be a good match for charcuterie and tapas.
So there you have it - a New Zealand skin-fermented Pinot Gris - seven words I don't often put together!
This wine is available from Vintage Roots for £18.50.
